About Gökçeada

Gökçeada is known as the largest island in Turkey and is affiliated with the province of Çanakkale. It is located in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, at the entrance to the Gulf of Saros. The island, which has a surface area of ​​297.6 square kilometers, has a wide and diverse natural beauty. In 2011, it became the world's first and only calm island by receiving the title of "Cittaslow". This title shows the island's determination to protect its natural and cultural heritage.

History

Gökçeada has hosted many civilizations throughout history. Known as Imbros in ancient times, the island is also mentioned in Homer's Iliad. The first traces of settlement date back to the Neolithic Age. The island was ruled by the Thracians, Persians, Athenians, Romans and Byzantines in turn. The island, which was part of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages, later fell into the hands of the Venetians and Genoese.

Gökçeada, which came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in 1455, remained under Greek occupation between 1912-1923. It joined the Republic of Turkey with the Treaty of Lausanne signed in 1923. During the Ottoman period, Muslim Turks settled on the island and the demographic structure of the island diversified.

Local Delicacies

Gökçeada has a rich and diverse culinary culture. The islanders are famous for their organic products and olive trees, which they produce using traditional methods. Olive oil has an important place in the island's cuisine and is used in many dishes. Goat cheese, made with milk obtained from goats raised on the island, is one of the most well-known products of the island. This cheese, which attracts attention with its flavor and quality, is consumed at breakfast and in various dishes. You can find the best examples of Aegean cuisine in local restaurants. Seafood, herb dishes and olive oil appetizers are especially popular.

Touristic Places

Aydıncık Beach, an ideal spot for water sports enthusiasts, is famous for its wide sandy beach and clear sea. It offers suitable conditions for activities such as windsurfing and kite surfing.

Salt Lake, famous for its healing mud baths, is an attractive spot for both health tourism and nature lovers. The area around the lake is ideal for walking and picnicking.

Incirburnu, the highest point on the island, offers magnificent views. Visitors can enjoy nature at this point, which is especially preferred for watching the sunset.

There are many historical structures and ruins in Gökçeada. Rock tombs, ancient churches and structures from the Ottoman period reveal the rich history of the island. These structures are important visiting points for history enthusiasts.

The historical villages of Gökçeada offer the opportunity to get to know the local life and culture closely. Villages such as Zeytinliköy, Bademli and Kaleköy are famous for their traditional architecture and friendly people.
